A Theological Reflection: In Whose Image Were Women With Disabilities Created?

God freely created human beings (Women With Disabilities-WWDs in this case) to share His abundance of life. In the same way, Christ in His mission as seen in the gospels of St. John he puts it clearly by saying; “I came that they may have life more abundantly” (John 10:10). This shows that God draws, in every time and place, to Himself, human beings. He calls all humankind to seek, to know and to love Him. For Him to achieve this heavenly call, in the richness of moments, He sent His only begotten son to redeem (Gal 4:4).

For believers, we find this to be an essential reality and sense of liberty that God calls all to make the best of their lives. To the WWDs, we find that they have embraced the society’s negative attitudes and ended up taking themselves as less perfect creatures. This therefore, in so many crucial ways denies them the sense of human dignity that God put in all human beings at creation when He created all in His image and likeness. This they do in failure to realize the image of God in them by focusing on their limitations and inadequacies.

In a close analysis of the miracles of Jesus, He never imposed Himself but allowed the victim to take initiative like during the healing of the blind men where they had to follow Jesus themselves (Matthew 20:29-34). When He asked them to say what they wanted him to do for them and He worked with them as per their requests; “Lord, that our eyes be opened”. This is an indication that the scripture challenges the WWDs to take initiative in life by living happily regardless to their shortcomings.

Liberation is an act of “freeing from bondage or oppression, an action or act of setting free” (Cowie, 1993, 718). This is reflected in the liberation theology which echoes that “Christian spirituality should be grounded in a preferential option for the poor” (WWDs in this case). This once achieved, Can WWDs will be in a good position to explore potentials and live a life full of liberty. It should be taken in a form of transition, which in other words is not a quick move but rather a transformation which has to go through some processes in order to come to a realization of true and total liberation. There is a strong call and need for an objective stance, which may be used to imply that once this is implemented, the concepts of equality and and human dignity will have been rooted in our society where the WWDs will have a feeling of being part and parcel of the ongoing development of humanity.

As an agent of transformation, am a social minister equipped with both relevant academic and practice competence. Christ is therefore commissioning me to bring to light His image which is present in the WWDs who are both loving mothers and wonderful spouses, a fact that is unnoticed by so many people in the society today. I take this with the dimension of Jesus Christ in His ministry when He declared: “the spirit of the Lord is upon me because He has anointed me to bring good news to the poor, He sent me to proclaim liberty to the captives and recovery of sight to the blind, to let free the oppressed and proclaim a year acceptable to the Lord” (Luke 4:18-19).
