It is high time the disability fraternity and especially the feminist disability field to stand up and claim the psycho-social well-being of women with disabilities. This can be well achieved by including psychology in aspects of challenges facing women with disabilities in the society. It is time to think and respond differently to femaleness and maleness in the rehabilitation and research of disability related issues. It is time to make sure that these responses occur at every level and dimension of research, rehabilitation and practice in general in the society. Psychological issues of women with disabilities and the gender debate need to be issues of consistent discussion and not just topics to be talked about during special disability and gender occasions or events. Awareness is education and education is continuous so awareness on the other hand should be a continuous exercise. Specialists in the disability field need to work together with specialists in the psychology field in order to bring together the two aspect since they are of great importance to women with disabilities.
The biggest asset in a human being is the mind, when the mind is in the right state, we are assured of good, healthy behavior and sound decisions. There is a lot to be done in the field of research on disability and psychology to ensure that women and persons with disabilities in general are brought on board. No one should be left behind when we talk of a healthy mind and a healthy body. There is need for both clinical and empirical gender-based research and recommendation to come up with realities of disability from the perspective of women with disabilities around the world and more so in the developing countries. Women with disabilities make up a big percentage of the population around the world, there is need for a disability desk in each public department and even more there is need for a specific desk for women with disabilities. In the disability field/movement, there is need for a special desk for women with disabilities assigned the responsibility to handle issues of women with disabilities. When studying challenges facing women with disabilities, there is need to break down the challenges in parts that can be handled in specific ways. Women with disabilities have challenges in areas like; education, employment/economic empowerment, social challenges, health issues and so forth. The health of women with disabilities need to be looked into depth including mental health, reproductive health and general health in the field of disability and rehabilitation.
There is very little documented on the empirical research on the psycho-social status of women with disabilities, this then leads to lack of psychological inclusion in the rehabilitation of women with disabilities. This brings a barrier to community integration of women with disabilities in all spheres of life. This is because, in the society, there is lack of sufficient researchers and interventionists strictly directed towards the inclusion of women with disabilities. The few interventionists who are in the society are not responsive enough when it comes to addressing matters of women with disabilities and indeed almost nothing when it comes to the psycho-social well-being of women with disabilities.
